Swing Concert

8:00 pm, Saturday 15th November 2008

This year's concert continues the theme of swing from the 1930s and 1940s and will be held in the church - the music will be in the style of the Lionel Hampton Quartet, which was an offshoot of the Benny Goodman orchestra.

The quartet is led by Roger Nobes, who is recognised as Europe's number one Vibraphone player. Roger played both Vibraphone and Drums with the Alex Welsh Band for nine years; they played frequently at Melbourn and Meldreth. During this time he had the opportunity to play with many famous visiting American legends like Ruby Braff, Ben Webster and Ted Teddy Wilson, who was Goodman's pianist. For several years Roger was Musical Director of the North Herts Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Roger's rhythm section consists of - on piano Mike O'Neill - who is the Musical Director of the Knights Templar Big Band, Harvey Weston former Alex Welsh Bass player and on Drums John Scotney.
