The Summer Garden Concert given by the Royston Town Band was very well received although the weather conspired against us an hour before we were due to start. We were most grateful to Paul and Sandra Ray who were hosting the event in their garden and they had clearly put in many hours of preparation that unfortunately could not be appreciated by those attending.
Although the staging had been erected in the church as a precautionary measure we had to make a rapid transfer and set out tables and chairs for picnics, etc. In the end it worked out very well and has shown that on another occasion, with just a little more preparation, our Summer Concert, including picnics, will work just as well in church if the weather is poor. So we hope that the numbers attending last year can be achieved again in future. On the picnic front one of the memories of the evening was of the aroma of curry coming from the Vestry where an enterprising couple were enjoying an Indian take-away. Although our numbers were down by a third on last year we still made nearly £600, not far short of the previous year's figure. We do thank all of our supporters for turning up in the damp and gloomy conditions and adapting to the changed venue for the evening. As for the entertainment, the Royston Town Band gave us a super evening of music to suit all tastes and we thank them and their conductor, John Brutnell. Our final thank-you goes to our band of fully 'trained' helpers who rounded off the evening by quickly packing away the stage, tables and chairs leaving the church completely ready for the 9.45 a.m. service on the following day.
