Summer Garden Concert - West Gallery Quire

7.30 pm, Saturday 4th July 2009

We are delighted that members of the Chiltern West Gallery Quire will bring the early nineteenth century back to Meldreth churchyard, for the Friends' annual summer concert.

West Gallery Quires were the providers of music in village churches before they were displaced by organs. Villagers who played and sang in local pubs the night before turned their talents, in similar style, to the church on a Sunday. That Meldreth had a thriving Quire is evidenced by the existence of a Meldreth Quire Book, once the possession of Churchwarden Hale, the village blacksmith.

The Chiltern West Gallery Quire will (hopefully) bring that very book, their collection of instruments (including a serpent), their singing and dancing talents and knowledge to our summer concert. What we would be grateful for is any small stools or low benches dating from the nineteenth century, which anyone may have stashed away and would be prepared to lend to the Quire for that evening. Also, if anyone's family lore has any memory of the Quire or a gallery at the west end of the church, please, please get in touch with Eleanor Edwards (261363), so that she can pass the information on to the Quire.

Above all, remember 4th July! Put it in your diary, bring your own picnic, seats or rugs and come and join in. Should the weather be unsuitable, the concert will be held in the church.
