An Undiplomatic Memoir

A talk by Sir David Wright GCMG LVO

Friday 12th February 2016

David Wright gave a fascinating talk wearing his diplomatic regalia including sword and many medals denoting his Honours. He set the tone for the evening by saying everything was off the record, non-attributable and would be denied. The challenges of being a diplomat were outlined, from literal translations to how to say 'No', best defined by Lester Pearson the Canadian PM who said: "The chief distinction of a diplomat is that he can say no in such a way as it sounds like yes." A further quote was "Why does the sun never set on the British Empire? Because God would not trust an Englishman in the dark." Altogether a very entertaining evening.
